The 2025 Giro d’Italia is set to make history with its inaugural start in Albania, marking a significant milestone for both the race and the host nation. From May 9 to 11, the first three stages will traverse the Albanian cities of DurrĂ«s, Tirana, and VlorĂ«, showcasing the country’s diverse landscapes and vibrant culture.
Stage 1 kicks off on May 9 in the coastal city of Durrës, leading riders through a 160 km route to the capital, Tirana. This medium-mountain stage features a challenging ascent to Gracen and two climbs of the Surrel hill, totaling 1,800 meters of elevation gain.
On May 10, Stage 2 presents a 13.7 km individual time trial within Tirana. Starting at Skanderbeg Square, the course winds through the city’s landmarks, including a climb to the Mother Albania monument, before descending back to the finish line.
The Albanian leg concludes on May 11 with Stage 3, a 160 km loop beginning and ending in Vlorë. Riders will face the formidable Llogara Pass, a climb reaching 1,030 meters, offering both a physical test and scenic views of the Ionian coast.
This historic Grande Partenza not only highlights Albania’s growing presence in international cycling but also sets the stage for an exhilarating 108th edition of the Giro d’Italia. Following the Albanian stages, the race will continue through Italy, culminating in Rome on June 1.
