Modern Rail Takes Shape: EU and EBRD Drive Albania’s Tirana-Durrës Railway Transformation
Construction is progressing on Albania’s major railway modernization initiative, focusing on the Tirana–Durrës–Rinas Airport corridor. This project is a collaborative effort between the Albanian government, the European Union (EU), and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), aiming to enhance national transportation infrastructure and regional connectivity.
Project Overview
Route and Scope: The project involves rehabilitating a 34.7 km railway line between Tirana and Durrës and constructing a new 7.4 km segment connecting Tirana to Rinas International Airport. The line will feature nine stops, including stations at the Tirana Public Transport Terminal (PTT), Vora, and the airport.
Electrification and Speed: Designed as Albania’s first fully electric railway, the line will support speeds up to 100 km/h. Travel times are expected to be approximately 22 minutes between Tirana and Durrës and 12 minutes between Tirana and the airport.
Station Development: An additional €40.7 million loan from the EBRD will fund the construction of 12 new station buildings, complete with modern amenities, platform covers, and public squares.
